What's for dinner? Is the question on everyone's mind between 4:00 and 6:00 every night at my house. I love to cook, but I am not able to come up with fantastic tasting, nutritious meals that everyone in my family will like at the spur of the moment.
My family, like most families, have different tastes and needs when it comes to dinner and I don't always like to eat the same things week after week. My mom only liked certain foods and those are the ones we ate. Don't get me wrong, I liked what she made. In fact, I use many of her recipes, (i.e. lasagna, cheesey potatoes, tacos, etc.) but I also like to try different things.
My husband grew up in a house where Cheerios was considered a "treat" so his tastes are a lot healthier than my are. He has inherited high cholesterol from his father, so he is always watching his fat intake.
My 88 year old grandmother lives with us and she likes to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. However, because of some of her medications, she should not eat too many green vegetables. She also has a hard time digesting some foods like lettuce and rice.
And then there are my kids. They of course have different tastes. What one likes, another might not. Luckily we don't have any major food allergies, however my youngest will break out in a very itchy rash if she eats too much cheese or milk products.
A little more than a year ago, I started to plan out a weekly dinner menu, so I could answer that question and it has helped out tremendously in many ways. Here's how: 1. I can answer "What's for Dinner" - sometimes I don't even get the question, because they can look on the menu! 2. Ordering pizza and going to In and Out Burger for dinner have been drastically reduced. Thus saving money and helping out with eating more nutritiously. 3. I buy only what I need at the grocery store and have money left over to get things toward my year supply of food. 4. I can incorporate "year supply" dinners, so my family is use to them. 5. If tonight's dinner is something that is not someone's favorite, then tomorrow's will probably be.
I am sure there are more good reasons but those are my top five.
